Ph.D. Universidad de Concordia, Canadá.

Luis Moran Tamayo received the title of Electrical Engineer at the University of Concepción in 1982 and the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (mention Electrical Engineering) at Concordia University, Montreal, Canada in 1990. Since September 1981 his been working in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Concepcion, where he holds the position of Professor since July 1997. He teaches courses in the areas of Industrial Power Distribution, electrical protection and quality of electricity supply.

His research is focused in the area of quality of electricity supply and active compensation of Electrical Systems.  He is author of over sixty articles published in journals of international prestige (ISI), three book chapters (Power Electronics Handbook, Electric Power Systems) and more than 100 papers presented at international congresses of the specialty. He was Associate Editor of the Transaction on Power Electronics between 1997 and 2001 and Editor of the International Journal of Power and Energy System, ACTA Press Canada between 2001 and 2007.

He has been invited to teach courses on “Quality of Power Supply” and “Active Filters” to different countries, among which include Mexico, USA, Brazil, Guatemala, Venezuela, Spain, Japan and Korea. He is the lead author of “A Three-Phase Active Power Filter Operating With Fixed Switching Frequency for Reactive Power and Current Harmonics Compensation”, awarded with the Outstanding Paper Award at the Conference on Industrial Electronics, held in August 1996 in Taiwan. This prize was awarded for being considered the best work published in the Transaction on the IEEE Industrial Electronics in 1995. He is also co-author of the paper “Design and Analysis of a PWM Ac / Ac Converter for Compensating Voltage Sags in Power Electrical Distribution Systems “, which won the award for best paper presented at the Industry Application Annual Meeting, held in Pittsburgh in 2002.

In 1998 he received the award in Applied Research by the Municipality of Concepcion, becoming the youngest investigator to receive this important recognition. In January 2005 he was promoted to Fellow of the IEEE for his contributions in the development of new technologies for reactive power compensation and harmonic currents. In 2008 he was nominated “Distinguished Lecturer” of the IEEE Industry Application Society.
